Promo
IT ALL STARTED WITH HGTV
In all honesty, I never set out to do promos. My friendly, conversational voice is never one that prompts a stranger to say, “Hey…you should do promos.” Not exactly the movie trailer voice type. So why do I even DO promos? Well, it started with an on-camera job I booked for HGTV. I played a realtor in some promos they shot for their shows. The HGTV producer on set that day said, “Do you do voice overs too?” To which I said, “Yeah, I do!” He said they were looking for some different promo voices and I should email him my demo.
That experience prompted me to begin looking at promos differently. For years, I thought producers and casting directors were only looking for booming (male especially) promo voices (to which I didn’t fit either of those). Once the HGTV producer said that, I started watching more TV promos. I realized that my voice would actually fit really well into certain categories like lifestyle brand shows (food, design, DIY, fashion), kids programming and reality show promos or promos that need a more millennial or warm, sultry, enticing voice.
LIFESTYLE PROMO VOICE
Isn’t it great when something you already love aligns with what you have to offer? I love HGTV, FOOD NETWORK, the COOKING CHANNEL, and the DIY NETWORK. I even host a lifestyle podcast featuring female leaders in Interior Design, Fashion, Beauty, Fitness, Food and Business. For six years, I also ran a blog called Parties for Pennies where I shared budget-friendly party ideas and I also created a lifestyle talk show called The Modern Post which solely featured bloggers. As you can see, I am entrenched in the lifestyle category and have done several voice over projects (as well as on-camera) for the Food Network and HGTV (on-camera). My voice is just the friendly neighbor that loves to share her favorite lifestyle show and doesn’t want you to miss one episode!
KIDS PROMO VOICE
Years ago, I wrote and recorded a few songs. I’ve always loved singing and writing and this was in my early 20s so still not sure my career path. I gave a few copies to my friends and the ones that had kids asked for more copies for their friends and THEIR kids. Why? Because their children asked to listen over and over again to my songs. At the time, I was a little offended but now I see that as a strength to bring to the table. I just have a voice (and maybe elementary songwriting ability ;p) that kids gravitate to.
My natural vocal range is on the higher side and I have a warmth to my voice, which is perfect for grabbing kids attention. Whether it’s for Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, PBS KIDS, Noggin or Disney, if you’re in need of a promo voice over for kids content, let me know.
REALITY SHOW PROMO VOICE
Reality shows make us feel like our problems aren’t that bad. We get sucked into the drama and it makes any that we’ve had fade from our memory. To hook your audience in for the next episode, you need a promo voice that understands that and both sets up the drama and can relate to your audience. If you need a young, millennial type female voice that can do a warmer, sultry, enticing read as well for your reality show promo, I’d love to help!
WHAT I CAN OFFER
With promo voice overs, I know you need someone that can deliver recordings quickly and that sound great. I have extensive training in Adobe Audition, a home studio equipped with Neumann TLM103 & Sennheiser MKH 416, a studio I co-own with my husband outfitted with a Sennheiser MKH 416 and a phone patch or source connect. Generally, I can do same day turnaround for promo recordings.
My sweet spot as a female promo voice talent are lifestyle promos, kid programming promos, reality show promos, young adult show promos and game show promos.
EXPERIENCE
I have over a decade experience working as a professional voice over. My full-time career is being a voice talent, so in addition to promo voice overs I also do commercials, industrials, IVR, audiobooks, radio imaging and animation voice overs.
